The United States and Iran exchanged fire on Thursday in the most serious test yet of their month-long ceasefire, but Iran said the situation returned to normal while the U.S. said it did not want to escalate.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s military said the U.S. targeted two ships entering the Strait of Hormuz and carried out strikes on Iranian territory. The U.S. military said it fired in response to Iranian attacks.<\/p>\n

Trump told an ABC reporter that the ceasefire was still in effect and sought to play down the exchange. \u201cIt\u2019s just a love tap,\u201d Trump told the reporter, according to her social media post.<\/p>\n

The renewed hostilities broke out as Washington was awaiting Iran\u2019s response to a U.S. proposal that would stop the fighting but leave the most contentious issues, such as Iran\u2019s nuclear initiative, unresolved for now.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s top joint military command accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian oil tanker and another ship, and of carrying out air attacks on civilian areas on Qeshm Island in \u2060the Strait of Hormuz and the nearby coastal areas of Bandar Khamir and Sirik on the mainland. <\/p>\n

The military said it responded by attacking U.S. military vessels east of the strait and south of the port of Chabahar.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Iran\u2019s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the Iranian strikes inflicted \u201csignificant damage,\u201d but U.S. Central Command said none of its assets were hit.<\/p>\n

Centcom said Iran had used missiles, drones and small boats in the attack, which targeted three Navy destroyers. The U.S. said it targeted missile and drone sites and other locations in response.<\/p>\n

\u201cCENTCOM does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Iran also said it would respond if attacked.<\/p>\n

\u201c(The) U.S. and its allies must know that Iran will respond forcefully and without the slightest hesitation to any act of aggression or attack,\u201d the military spokesperson said, according to state television.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Press TV later shared that, following several hours of fire, \u201cthe incident on Iranian islands and coastal cities by the Strait of Hormuz is back to normal now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two sides have occasionally exchanged gunfire since the ceasefire took effect on April 7.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the U.S. military said it destroyed six Iranian small boats and intercepted Iranian cruise missiles and drones as Tehran sought to thwart a U.S. naval effort to open shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

TRUMP URGES IRAN TO ACCEPT \u2060NEGOTIATED END TO WAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump, in a social media post that repeated parts of the Central Command statement, said three U.S. destroyers transited out of the Strait of Hormuz and came under fire, but suffered no damage, while stating that the Iranian attackers were \u201ccompletely destroyed\u201d along with several small boats.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese boats went to the bottom of the Sea, quickly and efficiently,\u201d he said. \u201cMissiles were shot at our Destroyers, and were easily knocked down. Likewise, drones came, and were incinerated while in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also urged Iran to accept a negotiated end to the war, saying: \u201cWe\u2019ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don\u2019t get their Deal signed, FAST!\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the latest exchanges, the U.S. had \u2060floated a proposal that would formally end the conflict but did not address major U.S. demands that Iran suspend its nuclear work and reopen the strait, which before the war handled one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and gas supply.<\/p>\n

Tehran said it had not yet reached a conclusion on the emerging project.<\/p>\n

Israel, which has also been fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, said on Thursday it had killed a Hezbollah commander in an airstrike on Beirut a day earlier, the first Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital \u2060since a ceasefire there was agreed last month.<\/p>\n

A halt to Israeli strikes in Lebanon is a major Iranian demand in negotiations with Washington.<\/p>\n

IMPACT ON OIL PRICES AND U.S. POLITICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The war has tested Trump\u2019s relationship with his U.S. base of supporters, after he had campaigned against involving the United States in foreign wars and promised to bring down fuel prices.<\/p>\n

U.S. crude futures rose as much as 3% in early trading in Asia on Friday after \u2060the renewed hostilities broke out.<\/p>\n

U.S. gasoline prices have climbed more than 40% since late February, rising by about $1.20 a gallon to more than $4, according to data from the American Automobile Association, as disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz pushed crude oil prices higher.<\/p>\n

Markets have swung sharply during the course of the war as hopes for a peace deal repeatedly rose and faded.<\/p>\n
